Apostille in Ukraine for Canada from 2024
On January 11, 2024, The Hague Convention came into force in Canada, which abolishes the procedure for legalization of documents. Citizens of countries participating in the Convention now only need to get an apostille in order to use documents in another country.
Ukraine joined the Convention in 2003. Therefore, when going to many European countries, it was enough for Ukrainians to put an apostille stamp on Certificates, Diplomas, Powers of Attorney and other documents issued by government agencies of Ukraine.
Since Canada was not a party to The Hague Convention until 2024, Ukrainians had to go through the consular legalization procedure. From January 2024, it will now be enough to affix an apostille stamp.
An apostille is needed when you plan to use documents issued in Ukraine. It confirms the authenticity of the signatures and seals on the document. Once you have received your apostille, you can submit documents to government agencies in Canada. Most often this is done for:
- obtaining a residence permit;
- getting an education in Canada;
- official employment;
- preparation of documents for marriage;
- purchase and sale of real estate, etc.;
- submission of documents to other government bodies.
For tourist purposes, a stamp is not needed.
How to obtain an apostille for Ukrainian documents for Canada?
An apostille is issued only in Ukraine, so think about preparing documents when planning your trip to Canada. Decide which documents you need.
The apostille stamp is placed in the ministries of Ukraine. It all depends on the type of document. You need to provide the original; an apostille is not affixed to copies of documents.
If you need to obtain an apostille for your Diploma and Birth Certificate, this must be done in different ministries. You cannot submit them to the same institution. The procedure can take on average from 5 to 20 days. In some cases, an additional request is submitted to the institution that issued the document.
