In this article, we will talk about cases when a document is lost, damaged, or it is necessary to obtain a new certificate to replace the old one. Most often, adults face such situations, but if a document is lost by a minor, then this article will also be relevant.
On the importance of Birth Certificates for adults
After receiving a Ukrainian passport, many consider it to be the main document. But in fact, a Birth Certificate does not lose its relevance even after receiving a passport and reaching adulthood. It is still one of the most important documents.
Why does an adult need a Birth Certificate:
- This document confirms a person's identity if a passport is lost.
- Proof of family ties - when obtaining a residence permit, citizenship, inheritance and in other notarial actions.
Therefore, we recommend you to be considerate towards the document: do not lose it, keep it in a proper condition. The Birth Certificate should not be damaged, lamination is prohibited. There should be no extra marks or seals on a valid document. If they are present, such a Birth Certificate must be replaced, it will not be accepted in government agencies of either Ukraine or other countries.
When is it necessary to replace a birth certificate with a new one?
There are 3 cases:
- The document is lost.
- The document is damaged and is considered invalid.
- It is necessary to replace the old document with a new type of certificate.
In the third case, there may be different situations. For example, there is a need to change a document issued in the USSR. There are cases when a foreign country asks to provide a document that was issued 3-6 months ago. You may have a new-style Birth Certificate, but the issue date does not meet the requirements of the receiving party. In this case, you also need to get a duplicate.
In case of re-issuance, both documents remain valid. The duplicate has the same legal force as the first document. But it is marked as re-issued.
