Regardless of the circumstances, it is worth remembering that a Death Certificate is a legal document that can be additionally requested not only by institutions in our country, but also abroad. In this case, a translation is needed.
Why is it necessary to translate a Death Certificate?
The first thing you should know is that the document is issued in the state in which the sad event happened. If a person died in another country, but is a Ukrainian, then relatives need to have a Death Certificate translated into Ukrainian to resolve a number of issues.
There are other cases when a Death Certificate is requested abroad. In such a situation, a translation shall be made into the official language of the country that requested the document.
The main cases when translation of a Death Certificate is needed:
- To get insurance. For example, if the death occurred as a result of an accident, and the deceased was insured.
- Inheritance issues. Here it may be necessary to translate the document into Ukrainian if the person died abroad, or into a foreign language if the relative had property in another country.
- Immigration. In cases where it is necessary to confirm a close relationship.
- Marriage abroad. If your spouse has died, but you plan to get married some time later, you must provide a Death Certificate.
These are the main cases when you need a translation. At the same time, there are also requirements for the document which you plan to use in another country.
Apostille and legalization of Death Certificate
If a death document is issued on the territory of Ukraine, then for other countries it has no legal force without legalization. For some countries, it is enough to obtain an apostille. This is a simplified procedure that confirms the authenticity of signatures and seals on the certificate. After its passage, the Death Certificate acquires legal force in countries that have signed the Hague Convention.
For all other countries you need to undergo consular legalization. After all procedures, the document must be translated from Ukrainian. Then, you will be able to use a Death Certificate abroad by presenting the document to foreign institutions.
