Today, the boundaries of communication between people are erased. People from different countries of the world meet, make friends, create families. To formalize a lawful marriage officially, you should do the paperwork properly. If the marriage takes place in Ukraine, a minimum package of documents is required from our citizens. If a person travels abroad to get married, it is necessary to prepare the entire package of papers in advance.

In this article, using the example of marriage in the EU countries, we will tell you what documents you have to prepare. We warn that the list is indicative. Each region has its own characteristics, so we recommend that you consult with your local authorities.

What documents are required?

Translation agency Pereklad.ua in Kyiv helps our clients to arrange all the necessary paperwork to go abroad for marriage. Our experts will cope with any task.

Required documents for marriage registration abroad:

  • Birth certificate. The person should provide not just the original, but also a translated and notarized document with an Apostille. In some cases, the second Apostille is required, which is placed on a notarized translation (sometimes it is called “double Apostille”). Such a procedure, established by the Hague Convention, confirms the authenticity of the certificate, as well as the powers of the persons who issued it, and facilitates the process of legalizing personal documents in other countries.
  • Affidavit , a statement (or as they say “a certificate”) stating that you are not married. A notary draws up such a statement. To obtain a certificate that you are not married, your internal passport, TIN and, preferably, a foreign passport, the details of which can also be reflected in the Affidavit, are required. Further, such a document is subjected to the same procedure as a birth certificate: apostillation, translation, and notarization.
  • Certificate of good conduct indicating your previous names, if they were changed. Those who do not have time for queues have the opportunity to quickly execute all the paperwork through our Agency (for more details, see “Certificate of good conduct” section). The certificate also requires an Apostille and a notarized translation.
  • Certification of residency in Ukraine. It is requested in individual cases. Today, this document is drawn up on “Appendix 13” form and received at the CDAS (Centre for the Delivery of Administrative Services).
  • Certificate of divorce or Divorce decree. They are necessary for those who used to be married. Apostille, translation and notary stamp is an obligatory part of preparing a document for a trip abroad for the purpose of marriage.
  • Excerpt about the premarital name is required for people who have changed their family name, if it differs from that indicated in the birth certificate.

We emphasize that every document goes through several stages: apostillation, translation into a foreign language, notarization. Our Translation Agency in Kyiv is ready to perform each stage, preparing references and certificates for travel abroad. For certification of documents, we will schedule your appointment with a notary. The notary can issue an Affidavit for you.

Our Agency specialists within the limits of legislation and international requirements perform each service. Turning to professionals makes for high-quality paperwork for submit documents to foreign bodies.

Please note:

If alteration of name took place in another country, it is necessary to present us already apostilled documents confirming the change of name. Our Agency will translate and notarize it, and then you will go to the Ukrainian authorities to change your family name with the received papers.

How to draw up documents if you are abroad

The situation when Ukrainians are already abroad and cannot come to Ukraine for paperwork is common. This problem is easy to fix. Our Agency works with citizens from anywhere in the world. It is enough to contact us, and we will show you how and where it is better to draw up a power of attorney for our representative to resolve the necessary issues..

Before starting the paperwork, we strongly recommend that you find out all the local authorities’ requirements in the country and region where the marriage is planned. There may be exceptions in every authority. There are times when the translation is performed only in the country where the marriage is to take place. Then in Ukraine, only Apostille is affixed to the original.
